Wildcats finish 6th, Lady Cats are 7th

It's safe to say the Woodland boys' cross-country team has arrived on the state scene. With a sixth-place team finish Saturday, the Wildcats had their best performance in program history at the state meet.

The Lady Wildcats weren't too shabby either as they finished seventh place in the team standings, the same spot they did last year.

At today's state meet, it wasn't just the weather that was perfect. Both teams ran their hearts out and ended a great season in a big way. Today was only the third time in WHS' history that the boy's team ran in the state meet -- they finished 6th and beat all the other teams in our region. The girl's also ran strong today finishing in 7th place. Thanks for an amazing season! Our runners (and parents) are the best!

BOTH Teams are Headed to STATE!

Congratulations to the both of our teams for qualifying for the state meet this Saturday! This is only the third time the WHS boys team has qualified!

The bus will depart WHS at 8:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Penny Davis and I will provide glass pens for any parents that want to decorate their car. We will also form a procession behind the bus as we did for regions for anyone interested.

The Booster Club will treat the boys and girls teams to a meal after the meet. At this time we have not decided where.
Expect the bus to arrive back at WHS between 3 and 4 p.m.

Regionals is Saturday!!!

Saturday both teams will race in the regional meet to determine whether or not they will make it to state. There is no doubt in my mind that both teams will run well enough to qualify for the state meet. For those parents that are interested, we will be meeting Saturday morning at the school 10-15 minutes before the bus is scheduled to depart (check with your child after practice tomorrow for bus departure times) to decorate our cars (Penny Davis and I will have glass pens available) and form a procession behind the bus to show our support for both teams. I encourage you to make every effort to attend Saturday's meet to show your support for our runners and coaches.

I look forward to seeing you on Saturday and cheering both teams on to state! Go Wildcats!

Tuesday’s fifth-annual Run at the Rock at Woodland was a featured race around the state. With 11 state-ranked teams attending, the 3.1-mile race featured some of the best teams in North Georgia. Read entire article>>

Bleckley Invitational / Saturday, Oct. 17

Please note that only the top 12 varsity runners will attend.
Meet Location: Bleckley Co. Elementary in Cochran, GA
Departing: 3:25 p.m. on Friday the 16th
Arival Home: Around 4:00 PM Saturday
Hotel: Budget Inn in Hawkinsville, GA 478-783-2002
Fee: $35 per runner to cover the cost of the hotel room and dinner on Friday night.
Make checks payable to Woodland HS Cross Country.

Directions to the meet: Take I-75 to Macon. At Macon take I-16 East towards Savannah. Travel on I-16 until you reach Exit 12 (Sgoda Rd) and turn right onto Sgoda Rd. Travel on Sgoda Rd. until you intersect Hwy 23 and turn left onto Hwy 23 South. Stay on Hwy 23 until you come to the 23/87 ByPass. Take the By Pass. Travel on the By Pass until you intersect Hwy. 26 and take a left. Travel on Hwy 26 for 1/4 of a mile and you will see Beleckley Elem. School on your right.

Volunteers Needed for the Fundraiser this Weekend!

Coaches Marvel and Forbes need the participation of each member of the cross country team this weekend for the biggest fundraiser of the season.

Octoberfest will be held at Pettit Creek Farms from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday. The girl's team will collect donations at the gate and the boy's team will help park cars. Get directions >>

Volunteers Needed for Run at the Rock / Tuesday, Oct. 13

Coaches Marvel and Forbes thank you for your help with the Bartow Country Championships last week! Coach Marvel said that the meet went smoothly because of the numerous parents and runners that helped out -- you guys are marvelous!

The coaches need your help with next week's Run at the Rock. The meet will be held on Tuesday, Oct. 13 at WHS. There are 22-25 teams coming and we will need to be well organized which, with your help, won't be a problem!

Please contact Coach Marvel via email or phone/text (770-655-2655) if you are able to volunteer for one of the following positions:

1. Two timers (experience required)
2. Two place card givers (no experience required)
3. One Placer in the finish chute (can’t be shy because you are placing the close finishes) Lloyd Taylor
4. Three Catchers in the finish chute (sweat and vomit is most likely found here)
5. Three gate keepers (no experience required)
6. Two people at packet pick up and scoring table (experience required for scoring and will need to be ready at 3:15 for packet pick up)
7. Four for parking duty (Clay Willis will be coordinating the parking)
8. Two split timers (one mile and two mile)
9. Concession help need to contact Penny Davis or Beth Lowery

We end this week with Darlington Cross Country Festival in Rome. The bus will leave WHS no later than 7:15 a.m. so make sure your runner arrives on time!

The Bartow County Championships will be held at Woodland High School.

Coach Marvel needs volunteers to help with the meet. He is looking to fill the following volunteer positions -- previous experience is not required!

- Two timers
- Three people in the chute at the finish to place the runners in the correct order
- Two people to hand out place cards
- Three people to assist with parking
- Two gate keepers

We're off -- and running!

Both teams are off to a great start this season. Both the boys and girls team ran their fastest team times ever at the Berry Invitational last Saturday. Their times earned the boys team a number 10 ranking in the state and the girls a number five ranking. What a great way to start the season! Their hard work over the summer is paying off. Go Wildcats!

Recently, two families have made really big donations to the team.

The Causey-Horstman family made a donation of $1,000. We have used some of the funds to make new directional signs for our meets, have grading work done on the rock trail and a banner created for the Run at the Rock meet. These could not have been purchased without their generation donation.

We were in need of another Seiko finish timing system and James Arnold donated a new one to the team. The timing system is about $400.

A huge THANK YOU to both families for their generosity in support of our cross country team!

Clara Bowl -- Saturday, Sept. 5

The bus will depart WHS for tomorrow's meet at 7:30 a.m. and return between 12 and 1 p.m. Please send lunch money with your child as the bus will stop at the food court at Mount Berry Mall before heading back to WHS.

Only the varsity runners will be participating in tomorrow's meet.

Picture Day -- September 3

This year's cross country team and individual pictures will be taken on Thursday, Sept. 3. Please remind your runner to bring their uniform to school with them. Order forms will be sent home soon.

Booster Club Report

On Tuesday, our coaches held a meeting with parents to discuss the upcoming season. Highlights are below!

Uniforms/Contributions: If your athlete ran last year and still has their uniform your contribution is $50. If your athlete will need a uniform your contribution is $100. (Uniforms can also be used for track!) Please make checks payable to Woodland High School and turn them into your child's coach as soon as possible. These contributions and the fundraisers held throughout the season help to pay for entry fees, trophies, medals and more!

Meet Sponsors: We are still in need of parents to provide nutritious snacks for our meets. Our runners need fuel before and after meets so please make sure the food you provide is healthy -- bananas, oranges, grapes, granola bars, animal cookies, etc. Please contact Beth Lowery at (c) 404-210-2910 or (h) 770-917-1763 to sign up.
